Yet, Europe's leading potash player K+S (NASDAQOTH: KPLUY  ) just said that, because of the upheaval that's occurred in the market, it was slashing its dividend by 82% for 2013,reducing the payout ratio to just 11% of adjusted after taxearnings, a far cry from the miner's usualratio of between 40% and 50%. Could this signal a new era of austerity that will ultimately see Potash,Agrium (NYSE: AGU  ) , and Mosaic (NYSE: MOS  ) end up whacking their payouts, as well?

DaVita (DVA) gained 8.9% and Fresenius (FMS) rose 7.2%.

  • [By John Divine]

DaVita HealthCare Partners (NYSE: DVA  ) , which specializes in kidney dialysis services, sank 5.9% Tuesday, ending as the most sold-off stock in the S&P, and for good reason. Late yesterday, a 9.4% -- about three times as steep as the expected amount -- was proposed for Medicare reimbursements for kidney dialysis. The catalysts for the proposed cuts are government reports alleging that Medicare overpaid by more than half a billion dollars for anemia drugs in 2011 alone.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

Shares of DaVita HealthCare Partners (NYSE: DVA  ) look like they might need a little care following the release of the company's Q3 results. For the quarter, revenues totaled $2.1 billion, an improvement over the $1.8 billion the company posted in the same period the previous year. Attributable net income went in the opposite direction, however, coming in at $136.6 million ($0.64 per diluted share) versus the Q3 2012 result of $144.7 million ($0.75).

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc.(DVA) and Fresenius Medical Care AG(FME.XE) & Co. traded higher after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said it will reduce payments to kidney dialysis providers by less than 1% over the next two years in a reversal of the much-larger cuts it had proposed earlier this summer. The move handed at least a temporary victory to dialysis providers like DaVita and Fresenius. DaVita’s shares jumped 4.4% to $59 premarket, while Fresenius’ stock climbed 7.7% to $34.71.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Alex Planes]

PotashCorp's difficulty sustaining its pricing power is underscored by recent reports from sulfate of potash (SOP) producer Compass Minerals (NYSE: CMP  ) , which charged a hefty premium of almost $300 per ton against Potash Corp's prices for muriate of potash. Efforts to move away from SOP sales seem to be the right choice -- PotashCorp peer Intrepid Potash'sSOP sales fell by 37%, while the average price received has slumped nearly 14% in the last quarter. Even ore miner BHP Billitonhas recently jumped into the fertilizer industry with a $2.6 billion build-out of a potash mine in Canada, which is all but certain to produce further downward pressure on potash prices.
